The Simple Product Lineup That Actually Works (No Cabinet Overhaul Required)

Good curl results don't require 20 steps. Charlotte curly hair specialist Alyssa Monét breaks down a simple 3-product framework — prep, hold, and finish — that gives you the curls you want without the overwhelm. Because a routine you'll actually do will always win.

Do you feel like your curl routine feels like a second job?

You've watched the tutorials. You've bought the products. You've tried the multi-step routines that take longer than your actual morning. And somehow, your curls still aren't where you want them to be.

Here's the truth: good curl results don't require 20 steps. You are not a paid influencer with three hours to spend on wash day. You're a real person with a real life and your routine should work for that life, not against it.

I'm a firm believer in simple curl care. And with the right foundation, three products can genuinely change everything.

Why Simplicity Works (And Complexity Usually Doesn't)

When routines get complicated, something almost always goes wrong, too much product, wrong layering order, or just the sheer overwhelm of it all leading to inconsistency.

Consistency is what actually creates great curls. A routine you'll do every wash day will always outperform a perfect routine you only attempt twice a month.

So let's simplify.

The framework I use with every single guest comes down to three categories: prep, hold, and finish. One product from each, and you have a complete, functional curl routine.

Step 1: Prep — Set Your Curls Up to Succeed

This is your foundation. Before you reach for a single styling product, your curls need to be set up with whatever they specifically need to thrive.

Prep products include things like:

  • Leave-in conditioners

  • Heat protectants

  • Curl primers or detangling sprays

The goal here is to address your curls' biggest need before any styling begins. If your hair tends toward dryness, a lightweight leave-in can add that layer of moisture that makes everything else work better. If you use heat, even just a diffuser, a heat protectant belongs here.

The key word for this step is lightweight. Sprays are ideal. You don't want to weigh your curls down before you've even started styling. Think of prep as priming a canvas, it makes everything that comes next perform better.

Step 2: Hold/Main Styler — The Star of the Show

This is where the real magic happens, and it's the most important decision in your routine.

Your main styler is what actually gives you the curls you want. This category includes gels, creams, and sometimes mousses — but the product you choose here should be chosen based on your specific goal, not what's trending.

Ask yourself: What do my curls actually need?

  • Volume and lift? A lighter gel or mousse might be your answer.

  • Definition and moisture? A cream or gel could work better.

  • Longevity and hold that lasts through day two or three? You'll want something with a stronger hold factor.

Too often, people grab whatever has the best packaging or the most hype online and then wonder why their curls aren't responding. Your goal is unique to you. The product choice should be too.

This step is where we spend the most time in consultations in the salon, because getting it right changes everything downstream.

Step 3: Finish — The Cherry on Top

Here's where it gets fun.

Once your prep and hold products are in, your curls are already in a good place. The finish step is about personalizing the final result — not fixing problems, but elevating what's already there.

Finish products include:

  • Mousses (for volume and texture)

  • Hairsprays (for hold and longevity)

  • Texture or shine sprays (for that extra something)

Think about the look and feel you're going for. Do you want big, voluminous hair? A light-hold volume mousse or texture spray can push your roots up and give you that extra body. Do you want defined, juicy curls that stay that way? A finishing spray with hold can lock everything in.

This step is optional — the first two alone can absolutely be enough. But if you want to take it to the next level, this is where you do it.

Putting It All Together

At minimum, you're working with three products. That's it.

And the beauty of this framework is that it's flexible. Start with one product from each category and see how your curls respond. As you get more comfortable and learn what your hair likes, you can layer in more within each step.

If curl care has felt overwhelming, start small. One prep product, one styler, one finish product. Give it a few wash days. Pay attention to how your curls behave. Then adjust from there.

You don't have to figure this all out alone.

Skip the Trial and Error — Let's Talk About Your Curls

One of my favorite parts of every salon appointment is the conversation we have about your routine. Not because I want to sell you products — but because trial and error is expensive, time-consuming, and honestly unnecessary when someone who knows curls can just tell you exactly what yours need.

In the salon, we go deep into what your specific curls need to reach your desired results: the products, the techniques, the order, all of it. You leave not just with great curls, but with the knowledge and confidence to recreate them at home.

Ready to stop guessing and start loving wash day and every day after that?

I'd love to help you build a routine that actually works for your life. I'll see you in my chair.

The Truth About Shampoo and How to do it Properly

Skipping shampoo because you think it dries out your curls? Learn why shampoo is actually essential for healthy curls, how to choose the right type, and proper cleansing technique that keeps your curls bouncy and defined.

The Truth About Shampoo

If you've been skipping shampoo because you heard it dries out curls, buckle up, we have a few things to chat about.

I hear it all the time from my guests at the salon: "Shampoo dries out my curls" or "I've heard shampoo is bad for my hair, so I barely use it."

But here's the truth: shampoo is an essential part of your curl care routine. Without it, your curls cannot thrive.

Why Your Curls Need Shampoo

Think about it this way: would you run a 5K, come home, and just put on lotion without taking a shower? Probably not.

Think of the time between wash days as that 5K. You're exposed to different elements- pollution, sweat, styling products. All of that builds up on your hair and scalp.

So does it make sense to just go in with conditioner, or should you cleanse everything from your hair first with shampoo?

To give your curls the ability to accept water and product more easily, we first need to remove buildup through proper shampooing.

Not All Shampoos Are Created Equal

Here's where things get tricky: using the wrong shampoo absolutely can dry out your curls.

Some shampoos are more cleansing and less hydrating. Others are more hydrating and less cleansing. Many fall somewhere in between, or are designed to target specific concerns.

Your "daily" shampoo—the regular shampoo you use each wash day—should be both cleansing and hydrating.

If you're using a clarifying shampoo as your go-to, that's likely the cause of your dryness. Clarifying shampoos are designed for more intense cleansing sessions and should only be used 1-2 times a month, not every wash day.

Proper Shampoo Technique Matters

Did you know that improper shampoo technique can actually make the detangling process harder?

When shampooing, we want to be organized and intentional. Here's how:

1. Make sure your hair is very wet first- Wet hair allows the shampoo to spread evenly and cleanses more effectively.

2. Emulsify your shampoo in your hands first- Create a lather in your palms before applying it to your scalp. This distributes the product better and prevents concentrated spots.

3. Apply to your scalp and stretch and smooth down your curls- This keeps your curls from tangling while you cleanse. Scrunching while shampooing creates tangles that make detangling harder later.

5. Scrub your scalp thoroughly while rinsing- Make sure to remove all of the shampoo from your scalp. Leftover product can cause buildup and irritation and also shorten the longevity of your set.

The Bottom Line

Shampoo isn't the enemy, it's actually essential for healthy, thriving curls.

The key is choosing the right shampoo for your curl needs and using proper technique. When you do both, you'll notice your curls feel cleaner, hydrated, and more defined.

If you're not sure which shampoo is right for you or want to dial in your wash day technique, that's exactly what we work on together during your appointment.

Your curls deserve the best care, and it starts with the basics.

Ready to simplify your routine and fall in love with your curls?

Reserve your appointment and let's create a wash day routine that actually works for you.

Curl Care Myths That Might Be Holding Your Curls Back(And What to Do Instead This Spring)

Think oil hydrates your curls or leave-in conditioner holds your style? These common curl care myths could be sabotaging your results. Learn what actually works and how to support healthier, more defined curls this spring.

If your curls feel dry no matter what you use, don’t hold their shape, or seem to get worse instead of better over time, I get it.

March is the perfect time to reset old habits and clear up some of the most common curl care myths I see every single week behind the chair. These misunderstandings often lead to frizz, lack of definition, inconsistent curl patterns, and stalled progress, especially for curlies who are trying to repair or “rehab” their hair.

Let’s break down what’s actually happening and how to support your curls moving forward.

Myth #1: Leave-In Conditioner Is a Styling Product

Leave-in conditioner is not meant to hold your style.

It’s a prep product, not a finisher.

Think of leave-in as the step that:

  • adds extra moisture after cleansing

  • creates a more even, hydrated canvas

  • Prepares your curls to receive stylers

What it doesn’t do:

  • Provide hold

  • Lock in definition

  • Maintain your curl pattern throughout the day

If you’re only using leave-in and wondering why your curls fall flat, get frizzy, or don’t last, this is usually why.

What to do instead:

  • Use leave-in sprays- these are lighter weight, will give you the hydration you need without weighing down your curls

  • Follow with a styler (gel, cream, or mousse) that provides actual hold

Prep ≠ Style.

Your curls need both.

Myth #2: Oils Add Moisture to Your Hair

This one surprises a lot of people.

Oils do not hydrate your curls.

Water hydrates your curls.

Oils actually:

  • Create a barrier around the hair

  • Make hair more water-resistant

  • Prevent moisture from getting in if used incorrectly

When oil is layered before proper hydration, it can leave curls feeling:

  • Dry

  • Coated

  • Brittle over time

That’s why so many people say, “I use oil all the time, but my hair still feels dry.”

So when are oils helpful?

Oils are best used:

  • After diffusing

  • To gently break the cast

  • To add softness and shine after hydration is locked in

Used this way, oil is a finishing touch, not a hydration step.

Conditioner is what seals water into the hair.

Oil is optional and situational.

Myth #3: You Can Easily Flip Between Curly and Straight During Curl Rehab

If you’re actively working on repairing your curls, frequent straightening can slow or stall progress.

Heat stretching:

  • Alters your curl pattern

  • Reduces bounce and elasticity

  • Makes curls appear looser and less defined over time

What I see most often is this:

  • Clients start curl rehab

  • Continue straightening “sometimes”

  • Get frustrated that curls don’t bounce back

Eventually, there’s a choice point.

Most people end up preferring one style and more often than not, it’s straight, because curls don’t look or behave the way they used to.

If your goal is healthier, more consistent curls:

  • Reducing or eliminating heat helps tremendously

  • Your curls retain shape and spring faster

This doesn’t have to be forever, but consistency matters while healing.

Myth #4: Curly Cuts Are Bad for Your Hair

Curly cuts aren’t “bad”, they’re specific.

The real question isn’t “Is a curly cut good or bad?”

It’s “How do you actually wear your hair most of the time?”

A curly cut works best when:

  • You wear your hair curly the majority of the time

  • You only straighten once or twice a year

  • Your goal is shape, volume, and definition in your natural texture

A curly cut may not be the best fit if:

  • You frequently switch between curly and straight

  • Straight styles are your primary look

  • You want one cut to behave the same in multiple textures

Your haircut should match your lifestyle, not trends.

When your cut supports how you truly wear your hair, everything else becomes easier:

  • Styling

  • Curl longevity

  • Volume and balance

The Common Thread Behind These Myths

All of these beliefs have one thing in common:

They focus on products and techniques instead of intentional curl care.

Healthy curls thrive when:

  • Each product has a clear purpose

  • Hydration is prioritized correctly

  • Styling supports your goals

  • Your haircut aligns with real life

Curl care doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does need to be intentional.

Ready for a Curl Reset This Spring?

Why Consistent Salon Maintenance Is Essential for Healthy Curly Hair

Healthy curls aren’t built in one appointment. Learn why consistent salon maintenance and realistic at-home care work together to help your curls thrive, prevent breakage, and create lasting shape and definition.

Consistency Is the Secret Your Curls Are Missing

If your curls feel like they’re never quite reaching their potential, falling flat, losing shape, or feeling dry no matter what products you try, this post is for you.

So many curly guests come into the salon feeling frustrated, confused, or discouraged. They’re doing something at home, but the results aren’t lasting. And often, the missing piece isn’t a new product or technique, it’s consistent in-salon maintenance paired with realistic at-home care.

Because healthy curls aren’t built in one appointment.

They’re built through partnership, patience, and consistency.

Curl Care Is a Partnership — Not a One-Time Fix

Working with a curly stylist is a collaborative relationship.

When you come into the salon, my role is to:

  • Assess the health of your curls and scalp

  • Address shape, balance, and definition

  • Troubleshoot issues like frizz, breakage, or inconsistent curl patterns

  • Create a simple, realistic plan you can actually maintain at home

But what happens between appointments matters just as much as what happens in the chair.

Your results depend on both of us showing up.

When salon care and at-home care work together, curls truly thrive.

Think of Your Curl Care Like Going to the Gym

You can’t go to the gym once and expect a six-pack.

Reaching physical goals takes:

  • Repetition

  • Consistency

  • Time

The same is true for your curls.

One great curly cut can absolutely be transformative, but lasting results come from maintaining that shape over time. Skipping appointments for months and hoping everything will “snap back” in one visit sets unrealistic expectations for both of us.

Progress with curls is gradual, intentional, and incredibly rewarding when you stay consistent.

Salon Visits Are Like Going to the Dentist

Another way to think about curl maintenance?

Your salon appointments are like dental checkups.

You wouldn’t:

  • Only brush your teeth the night before you’re due to see the dentist

  • Skip flossing for months and expect perfect results

  • Ignore toothaches and hope nothing worsens

Instead, you:

  • Brush and floss daily

  • Visit regularly for cleanings and X-rays

  • Address small issues before they become big ones

Your hair works the same way.

At home, you care for your curls day-to-day.

In the salon, we monitor progress, adjust the plan, and prevent future issues.

Why Regular In-Salon Maintenance Matters

Consistent salon visits allow me to track patterns and prevent problems before they escalate.

This includes watching for things like:

  • Breakage and thinning

  • Excessive shedding

  • Loss of shape or balance

  • Scalp concerns

  • Length stagnation

Just like dental X-rays reveal things you can’t see at home, regular curl appointments help catch subtle changes early, when they’re easiest to correct.

Waiting too long between visits often means we’re playing catch-up instead of moving forward.

Neglect Between Appointments Slows Your Progress

The honest truth:

Neglecting your curls between appointments and expecting quick results in the salon is unrealistic.

That doesn’t mean perfection is required.

It means consistency matters more than intensity.

Skipping wash days, using products inconsistently, or abandoning the plan altogether makes it harder to:

  • Retain moisture

  • Maintain shape

  • Preserve definition

  • See long-term improvement

The goal isn’t doing everything perfectly.

The goal is doing the right things consistently.

What Happens When We Stay Consistent

When you commit to regular maintenance and realistic at-home care, here’s what typically happens:

  • Your curls start holding shape longer

  • Wash days become easier and more predictable

  • Frizz becomes more manageable

  • Definition lasts beyond day one

  • Volume improves without sacrificing length

Most importantly, you stop feeling like your hair is “fighting” you.

Instead, it starts working with you.

My Role as Your Stylist

I am not here to make you feel bad.

My job is to:

  • Support you

  • Educate you

  • Encourage you

  • Give you the tools you need to succeed

I genuinely want you to reach your curl goals, whether that’s more shape, better definition, healthier length, or simpler routines.

But reaching those goals requires partnership.

I’ll guide you every step of the way.

You just have to meet me halfway.

Ready to Commit to Your Curls?

If you’re ready to stop starting over

If you’re ready to build consistency instead of chasing quick fixes

If you’re ready to treat your curls with the same care you give other parts of your life

Then you’re already on the right path.

Your curls don’t need perfection.

They need commitment, patience, and support.

Let’s make it happen together.

You can Reach Your Curl Goals in 2026

2026 is the year you finally wear your curls with confidence. Before setting big curl goals, take time to reflect on what’s been holding you back and how to make small, simple shifts that move you closer to your dream curls.

2026 — the year you've decided you’re finally going to wear your curls.

You’ve been dreaming about it: healthy, defined, confident curls that feel like you.

But before you jump straight into your “curl era,” there’s some important pre-work to do.

Before You Set Your Curl Goals, Audit What’s Holding You Back

If your goal is to have your dream curls, the first logical step might seem like just start wearing them.

And while that’s a step in the right direction, there are usually a few things standing in the way that need attention first.

Take a moment to ask yourself:

  • What has been the biggest reason I haven’t been wearing my curls regularly now?

  • Is my routine too complicated or time-consuming?

  • Do I struggle with finding the right products?

  • Are my curls in a place where they don’t feel like the best representation of me?

All of these are valid reasons to hesitate and they deserve to be acknowledged, not ignored.

Before you can set new goals, you need to understand the why behind where you are right now.

Step One: Identify the Challenge

Write down the challenges keeping you from wearing your curls.

Be honest with yourself, this isn’t about judgment, it’s about clarity.

Maybe you’ve tried routines that felt overwhelming.

Maybe your curls were damaged or inconsistent, and styling never turned out how you hoped.

Whatever it is, getting clear on what’s blocking you helps you build a plan that actually fits your life and helps to overcome these roadblocks.

Step Two: Brainstorm Simple Solutions

Once you know the “why,” start exploring the “how.”

Here are a few easy ways to simplify and rebuild confidence in your curls:

  • Try styling with two core products instead of four.

  • Decide what your main goal is — longevity, volume, or definition — and choose products that support that specific goal.

  • Find a style that feels comfortable and realistic for your day-to-day.

Remember: this is about progress, not perfection.

Step Three: Take Tiny Steps

One thing I’ve learned (and teach my guests often): lasting results come from small, consistent steps.

When you’re building a new habit or routine, start slow.

Schedule small things at comfortable intervals —

like wearing your curls for one full weekend, or washing with intention once a week.

Each tiny step builds trust, both with yourself and your curls.

There’s no rush. Consistency beats intensity every time.

Step Four: Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Help

You don’t have to figure it all out alone.

Whether you need product guidance, a customized cut, or help simplifying your routine, support makes all the difference.
